(Newswire.net — October 25, 2022) Orlando, FL — Over decades, research has shown some contributing factors of osteoarthritis development and the techniques potentially helpful to sufferers. Experts have time and again warn against the poor health outcomes correlated with this condition.

Biphosphonates are now found to offer pain relief for osteoarthritis. According to St George’s, University of London research, a drug normally given to osteoporosis sufferers could offer effective pain relief to individuals suffering from knee and hip osteoarthritis.

It is worth noting that Bisphosphonates are a group of drugs known to alter the structure of bone. Further, they are most often prescribed to patients with osteoporosis, which is a condition characterized by fragile bones.

It has, however, remained unknown, whether these drugs could be helpful in lessening pain and discomfort for patients with the joint condition osteoarthritis. It is important to mention osteoarthritis causes cartilage damage, bony growths, and sore tissue.

In this study, the investigators used existing studies in evaluating the effectiveness of a variety of bisphosphonates in patients with osteoarthritis of the hand, knee, spine, and hips. Of 3832 patients studied, in most cases, these medications showed limited pain relief.

However, a few studies did demonstrate benefits. As a matter of fact, bisphosphonate alendronate was found to be more effective for patients with hip osteoarthritis compared to existing pain-relieving drugs.

“Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis worldwide. It causes damage to bone and cartilage in the joints of affected people. Most treatment is focused around pain relief, as no robust treatments have been discovered that slow down the progression of the disease,” Dr. Nidhi Sofat, the lead researcher said.

“We found that, generally, bisphosphonates are ineffective at managing pain associated with osteoarthritis. But zoledronate and alendronate, which are specific forms of bisphosphonates, do show the potential for effective pain management specifically in patients with knee and hip osteoarthritis.

Health authorities have long been stressing the relevance of resorting to certain measures in managing osteoarthritis better. These include making certain dietary and lifestyle improvements, which are potentially useful in the management of the condition.

Supplements like Divine Bounty Glucosamine are widely resorted to nowadays as a safer alternative to pharmaceutical pain relievers. It is worth noting that glucosamine has long been known for its cartilage-repairing abilities.
