( — November 1, 2022) Orlando, FL — Study findings have time and again shown some measures potentially helpful against incurable and painful diseases like osteoarthritis. This condition continues to wreak havoc on the quality of life and health of more than 500 million of sufferers worldwide today.

Researchers now suggest hormone therapy may work best against knee osteoarthritis. This is based on a new large-scale study from Korea that has shown women receiving HT had a significantly reduced prevalence of symptomatic knee osteoarthritis compared with women who did not take hormones.

The study results were published online in Menopause, the journal of The North American Menopause Society (NAMS).

Health authorities have long warned osteoarthritis is the most common musculoskeletal disorder in older people. Further, it is the leading cause of pain and physical disability.

It is worth being warned this condition is caused by degenerative changes in the joints and is more common in women than in men. It has been theorized that due to hormonal changes in women, particularly estrogen level reductions, the risk of osteoarthritis increases following menopause.

Due to the fact that the knee is the most commonly affected joint, many scientists carried out studies focusing on knee osteoarthritis relative to the effectiveness of HT. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the most common treatments for this condition, but the drawback is that they cause side effects.

“Past and current users of hormone therapy had a lower prevalence of knee joint osteoarthritis, suggesting that hormone therapy may be protective against knee osteoarthritis,” says Dr. JoAnn Pinkerton, NAMS executive director. “This study suggests that estrogen taken at menopause may inhibit cartilage damage and reduce knee deterioration seen on x-rays.”

Health authorities have long been stressing the significance of resorting to certain measures in protecting joint health and warding off osteoarthritis.

These include making certain dietary and lifestyle modifications, which are techniques found helpful in the treatment and prevention of the condition. Some amino sugars like glucosamine are being studied today due to their arthritis-fighting benefits.

In studies carried out over the years, scientists found that intake of glucosamine helped improve osteoarthritis symptoms. It is worth mentioning this amino sugar works wonders in repairing joint cartilage damage, in addition to producing anti-inflammatory benefits.
