For the first research, the investigators actually recruited 30 adults who suffered from major depressive episodes.
The subjects were made to fill out electronic surveys prior to, half-way-through and following a 30-minute session of either moderate-intensity cycling or sitting, and then 25-, 50-, and 75-minutes post-workout.
The investigators then utilized the survey data in tracking any changes in three characteristics of major depressive disorder. These are depressed mood states, anhedonia, and decreased cognitive function.
It is worth noting that during the cycling experiment, the depressed mood state of the subjects improved over the 30 minutes of exercise, and even consistently up to 75 minutes afterward. The researchers have also revealed improvement in anhedonia started dropping off at 75 minutes post-exercise.
“Overall, the pilot study showed people were interested and would stick with the combined approach, and that exercise seemed to have some effects on depression and a couple of the mechanisms of therapy.”
