Experts Warn Antibiotic Resistance and Corruption Linked

(Newswire.net — November 10, 2022) Orlando, FL — Scientists are increasingly studying antibiotic resistance, the rates of which continue to rapidly grow in many areas around the world. This global health issue is largely caused by antibiotic misuse or overuse, but there are many contributing factors experts warn against.

A study highlights a link between antibiotic resistance and poor governance and corruption around the globe.

In this research, the scientists looked into antibiotic resistance in Europe from both a medical and a political-economic perspective. It was actually a joint project from the ANU School of Medicine and the ANU Crawford School of Public Policy.

“The increase in antibiotic-resistant infections was one of the greatest threats facing modern medicine,” said Professor Peter Collignon.

Collignon lead researcher from The Australian National University (ANU) School of Medicine said

It is worth being warned that in the United States alone, about 23,000 deaths and two million illnesses every year have been attributed to antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

“We found poor governance and higher levels of corruption are associated with higher levels of antibiotic resistance,” he said. “It is a finding that will be surprising to most people in the field of Medicine.”

The World Health Organization warns it is a looming crisis in which common and treatable infections are becoming life-threatening.

“The research suggests that addressing corruption and control of antibiotics could help lower antibiotic resistance and save lives,” Professor Collignon added.

The findings of this research were published in PLOS ONE.

Countries with increased levels of corruption frequently had less rigorous and less transparent processes, with less effective controls over areas pertinent to antibiotic resistance.

“These include factors that affect antibiotic usage and the ways antibiotic-resistant bacteria spread via water, foods, and poor infection control,” Co-author Associate Professor Senanayake said.

In fighting antibiotic resistance, it may be helpful to address the issue of antibiotic overuse or misuse. This can be made by lessening the risk of urinary tract infections, which are often treated through the use of antibiotics. There are remedies like D-mannose that could be helpful against UTIs.

There are extra-strength formulas like Divine Bounty D-mannose that consumers turn to nowadays in taking advantage of the healing goodness of this remedy.
