Research Warns Slow Walkers More at Risk of COVID-19 Mortality

(Newswire.net — November 23, 2022) Orlando, FL — There are factors like poor immunity and having certain diseases that increase the odds of death by Covid-19. It is important to keep in mind that there are other contributors to this increased risk.

This is according to a team of researchers from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Leicester Biomedical Research Centre led by Professor Tom Yates at the University of Leicester.

In this study, it has been found slow walkers are nearly four times more susceptible to dying from Covid-19. Further, the findings have shown that they have more than twice the odds of contracting a severe version of the virus.

It was made involving 412,596 middle-aged UK Biobank participants. The investigators looked into the relative link between body mass index (BMI) and self-reported walking pace with the odds of contracting severe COVID-19 and COVID-19 mortality.

Such an analysis particularly revealed that slow walkers with normal weight were nearly 2.5 times more susceptible to Covid-19 severity. They also had an increased risk of dying from the virus by 3.75 times more than the normal-weight fast walkers.

The lead researcher is Professor Yates, a Professor of Physical Activity, Sedentary Behaviour, and Health at the University of Leicester.

“We know already that obesity and frailty are key risk factors for COVID-19 outcomes. This is the first study to show that slow walkers have a much higher risk of contracting severe COVID-19 outcomes, irrespective of their weight” Professor Yates said.

“With the pandemic continuing to put unprecedented strain on health care services and communities, identifying individuals at greatest risk and taking preventative measures to protect them is crucial,” he added.

It is important to note that in this study, the odds were uniformly high in slow walkers with obesity and in normal-weight slow walkers.

The study ‘Obesity, walking pace and risk of severe COVID-19 and mortality: analysis of UK Biobank’ was published on 26 February 2021 in the International Journal of Obesity.

Health authorities have been time and again stressing the relevance of taking some measures to help increase protection against Covid-19. It is important to note that in addition to exercising, it is also helpful to take into account the use of plant-based remedies like curcumin.

This phytochemical has long been known to work wonders in delivering immunity-boosting benefits. Its use has also been found by researchers to be helpful in warding off a range of diseases. There are many who use it as a great addition to their immunity-boosting diet.

It is obtained widely today through the use of formulas like Divine Bounty Curcumin (http://www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-BioPerine-Pepper-Extract/dp/B00VSVKJ8I).
