The Right Sleep Quantity May Lead in Smarter Snacking, Experts Suggest

(Newswire.net — November 24, 2022) Orlando, FL — Studies revealing the relevance of adequate sleep continue to pile up. Some researchers even highlight its link with eating behaviors. 

A study has shown that missing out on the recommended seven or more hours of sleep every night increases the odds of having poorer snacking choices. 

This analysis of data involving nearly 20,000 adults in the U.S. has particularly found that unlike those who meet the shut-eye guidelines, those who did not were at an increased likelihood of consuming more snack-related carbohydrates, added sugar, fats, and caffeine.

The researchers further revealed that favored non-meal food categories, such as salty snacks and sweets, and non-alcoholic drinks,  are similar among adults regardless of sleep habits,. However, those getting less sleep have the propensity to eat more snack calories in a day overall.

The findings have also shown that snacking at night, which is a popular American habit, is not influenced by how much we sleep.

“At night, we’re drinking our calories and eating a lot of convenience foods,” said Christopher Taylor, professor of medical dietetics in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at The Ohio State University and senior author of the study.

“Not only are we not sleeping when we stay up late, but we’re doing all these obesity-related behaviors: lack of physical activity, increased screen time, food choices that we’re consuming as snacks and not as meals. So it creates this bigger impact of meeting or not meeting sleep recommendations.”

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and Sleep Research Society suggests that adults get seven hours of sleep or longer every night on a regular basis to promote optimal health. 

“We know lack of sleep is linked to obesity from a broader scale, but it’s all these little behaviors that are anchored around how that happens,” Taylor said.

The findings were published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

More studies are still being carried out to look into the effects of sleep on eating behaviors. Researchers have long been stressing the relevance of taking some measures helpful in enhancing sleep quality and quantity.
