Research Warns Sleep Disruption Raises Cardiovascular Disease Risk

(Newswire.net — December 20, 2022) Orlando, FL — Sleep deprivation has long been associated with the increased risk of certain diseases. Some studies have also shown how sleep disruption is linked with cardiovascular disease.

One research has revealed that disrupted sleep actually increases the odds of cardiovascular disease, particularly atherosclerosis. Researchers say it does so by promoting inflammation. 

The findings of this interesting study were published in the open-access journal called PLOS Biology.

It was carried out by Raphael Vallat, Vyoma Shah, and Matthew Walker of the University of California at Berkeley and colleagues.

The research revealed that fragmented sleep actually has the ability to exacerbate atherosclerosis. Further, it may increase the odds of stroke through its impacts on the inflammatory pathways. 

In testing whether the impact may be due in part to elevated inflammatory signaling, the investigators measured sleep disruption through both sleep lab-based polysomnography. They also used a simple movement detector worn on the wrist over multiple nights (actigraphy).

Further, it is worth mentioning the investigators used standard blood cell counts in measuring levels of neutrophils and monocytes. These are two types of white blood cells found to be responsible for driving inflammatory pathways.

It’s been found that sleep fragmentation predicted both increased neutrophil counts and higher coronary artery calcium, which is a measure of atherosclerosis pathology.  

Through the use of a statistical method called mediation analysis, the researchers found that the influence of sleep fragmentation of coronary artery calcium was actually mediated through neutrophil increase. 

In other words, poor sleep resulted in an increase in neutrophils, which in turn led to elevated atherosclerosis. 

“Improving sleep may offer a novel way to reduce inflammation and thus reduce the risk of atherosclerosis,” Walker said. “These findings may help inform public health guidelines that seek to increase the continuity of sleep as a way to improve health and decrease the burden of heart disease on society.
