Sleep Now Found To Improve Reactions to Events, a Study Shows

Sin is a health psychologist and assistant professor in UBC’s department of psychology who spearheaded the study.

“But we found that when a person sleeps less than their usual amount, they don’t have as much of a boost in positive emotions from their positive events.”

It is worth noting that in this study, subjects also reported many stressful events in their daily lives. These include work and family stress, social tensions, arguments, and being discriminated. Those who slept less than usual responded to these stressful events with a greater loss of positive emotions.

In the previous study carried out by Sin and colleagues, it has been found that failure to maintain positive emotions during stressful situations places people at risk not just of inflammation, but also of earlier death. 

This research used daily diary data from a national U.S. sample involving nearly 2,000 people. The investigators analyzed the sleep duration and the manner the subjects responded to negative and positive situations the next day. 

“A large body of research has shown that inadequate sleep increases the risk for mental disorders, chronic health conditions, and premature death. My study adds to this evidence by showing that even minor night-to-night fluctuations in sleep duration can have consequences in how people respond to events in their daily lives.”
