(Newswire.net — January 11, 2023) Ste 177 Winnetka, IL, IL — Years of research have shed light on the causes, symptoms, and even treatments of the increasingly common mental health issue called depression.
Researchers now recommend possible links in between obesity and depression. This major review shows that individuals with obesity may be more susceptible to depression. Further, the investigators revealed that depressed individuals may also be more likely to become obese.
Researchers led by Sarah M. Markowitz, M.S. carried out the study to understand the connection. In doing so, they examined the correlational data recommending a connection between the conditions.
They were able to find evidence for causal pathways from obesity to depression and depression to obesity.
It is further worth noting that individuals who are obese may also be more likely to become depressed due to the experience of poor health and dissatisfaction with their appearance. Experts warn that such an occurrence has been found to be particularly prevalent among women and those of high socio-economic status.
Due to physiological changes in their hormone and immune systems that usually co-exist with depression, individuals who are depressed may be more susceptible to obesity. They may also have more trouble taking good care of themselves because of the symptoms and consequences of depression.
These include difficulty adhering to fitness regimens, overeating, and having negative thoughts.
There are treatments like exercise and stress reduction that aid in the management of both obesity and depression simultaneously. There are measures that should be minimized like dieting – which can worsen mood – and the use of antidepressants that trigger weight gain.
“The treatment of depression and obesity should be integrated,” the authors conclude.
“This way, healthcare providers are working together to treat both conditions, rather than each in isolation.”
This study is published in the March 2008 issue of Clinical Psychology: Science and Practice.
More and more people are turning to various measures just to improve their overall mental health. It is important to keep in mind that certain dietary and lifestyle improvements could be significantly helpful against depression.
Some therapeutic ingredients like ashwagandha are also found to be useful. There have been various studies highlighting the impressive antidepressant benefits of using this medicinal herb.
