Researchers Found Toxic Substances in Alcoholic Beverage Bottles

A new study warns that bottles of wine, beer, and spirits contain potentially dangerous levels of toxic elements in their enameled decorations. These particularly include toxins like lead and cadmium. 

This research was carried out by scientists at the University of Plymouth who analyzed both the glass and enameled decorations on various clear and colored bottles readily available in shops and supermarkets.

It has been found that lead, cadmium, and chromium were all present in the glass. However, they are at concentrations where their environmental and health risks were considered to be of low significance.

The findings of this research were published in Environmental Science and Technology. 

It was particularly carried out by Associate Professor (Reader) in Aquatic Geochemistry and Pollution Science, Dr. Andrew Turner.

The investigators warn that there were greater concerns about the enamels as it has been found to have cadmium concentrations of up to 20,000 parts per million. These were identified in the decorated regions on a range of spirits, beer, and wine bottles.

Further, they had lead concentrations up to 80,000ppm in the décor of various wine bottles. It is important to note that the limit for lead in consumer paints is 90 ppm.

“It has always been a surprise to see such high levels of toxic elements in the products we use on a daily basis. This is just another example of that, and further evidence of harmful elements being unnecessarily used where there are alternatives available. The added potential for these substances to leach into other items during the waste and recycling process is an obvious and additional cause for concern,” Dr. Turner said.
