Research Warns About Lack of Sleep and Heart Disease

One study was published in Cardiovascular Research, a journal of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC).

In this research, it has been found lack of sleep may be the reason why poor people are at more risk of heart disease. More particularly, those with lower socioeconomic status actually sleep less for various reasons. 

These include factors like living in noisy environments, doing several jobs, and having greater levels of emotional and financial stress.

This large population-based study was the first to examine whether lack of sleep could explain partly why there is a high prevalence of heart disease in poor people. It highlighted that short sleep explained 13.4 percent of the association between occupation and coronary heart disease in men. 

“The absence of mediation by short sleep in women could be due to the weaker relationship between occupation and sleep duration compared to men,” said Study author Dusan Petrovic.

Petrovic is from the University Centre of General Medicine and Public Health (unisanté), Lausanne, Switzerland.

“Women with low socioeconomic status often combine the physical and psychosocial strain of manual, poorly paid jobs with household responsibilities and stress, which negatively affects sleep and its health-restoring effects compared to men,” he said.

The researchers suggest that structural reforms are required at every level of society in promoting better sleep. This includes reducing noise, which is a major source of sleep disturbances.
