(Newswire.net — January 20, 2023) Orlando, FL — Scientists have long been carrying out studies to look into the ways helpful in lessening obesity rates. Experts have time and again said that eating fast food is one of the major culprits of this health issue.
A new multi-country research has shown that 94 percent of full service meals and 72 percent of fast food meals across five countries contained 600 calories or even more. The research has further shown that meals from fast food restaurants have 33 percent fewer calories compared to meals from full service restaurants.
This suggests that fast food restaurants shouldn’t be singled out when looking into the ways to address overeating that the obesity epidemic worldwide.
The findings of this research were published in The BMJ.
“Fast food has been widely cited as an easy target for diet change because of its high calorie content; however, previous work by our team in the U.S. identified restaurant meals in general as an important target for interventions to address obesity,” said first and co-corresponding author Susan B. Roberts, Ph.D.
Roberts is senior scientist and director of the Energy Metabolism Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University.
“Eating out is now common around the world, but it is important to keep in mind that it is easy to overeat when a large restaurant meal is likely to be only one of several meals and snacks consumed that day.”
The research measured the calorie content of meals most frequently ordered from 111 randomly selected full service and fast food restaurants in five countries, namely Brazil, China, Finland, Ghana and India.
It also included five worksite canteens, which are quite common in Finland, that often offer subsidized lunch options to support employee health.
The World Health Organization warns that the global obesity epidemic nearly tripled in the last four decades.
It is important to note that identifying the facts that result in overeating like eating practices and environmental factors may actually aid in the development of effective interventions.
