Customers can dine in at the Hamden restaurant accompanied by live-streamed music. Pickup and delivery services are also available from Mondays to Saturdays.

The update coincides with a study published by Vegetarian Times Magazine, revealing that 7.3 million Americans now follow a vegetarian diet. In addition, the number of vegans in the U.S increased from 0.4% to nearly 3.5% over the past 2 years.

Together with providing meat-free options, the restaurant promotes the Mediterranean diet which is high in fresh vegetables, nutrient-rich foods, and unsaturated fats such as olive oil.

“Sensing a growing movement towards fresh, healthier foods, Meriden native Peter Vouras opened the first Freskos in early 2016 as an alternative to traditional fast-food establishments,” said a representative.

Freskos’s menu highlights include imported, dairy-free Greek veggie burgers with a soft bun, lettuce, tomato, red onion, and optional tzatziki. Grilled, organic, marinated tofu souvlaki is served on warm pita bread with red onion, tomato, fresh dill, and tzatziki and the Ya’Sou Gyro, a plant-based gyro!

Other main courses include vegetarian pita pizza with extra virgin olive oil, red onion, Kalamata olives, green peppers, imported feta, and mozzarella. The restaurant’s appetizers and sides include feta sticks, cheese balls, lemon potatoes, stuffed grape leaves, and Gigantes – giant Greek beans in a tomato and olive oil sauce.

For non-vegetarians, a wide variety of meat-based dishes are available including chicken and pork souvlaki and classic gyros. The menu also includes traditional Greek and Horiatiki salads, soups, desserts, and beverages.

Family-run restaurant Freskos was founded by Peter Vouras – a former VoxPop magazine publisher, stand-up comedian, and actor. The restaurant imports many of its fresh ingredients to provide customers with an authentic Greek dining experience. The eatery has been voted ‘Best Greek Restaurant’, ‘Best Gyro’, ‘Best Salad’, and ‘Best Mediterranean Restaurant’ in CTNOW’s Best of New Haven reader’s poll.

A satisfied customer said: “I can’t say enough amazing things about Freskos. It’s the go-to place for my wife and me when we are in the mood for Greek food. They have a great variety of choices to switch it up and it is so authentic! My wife is a vegetarian and was so excited to try the tofu souvlaki. Now she gets it every time.”
