Active Shooter Survival: Security Mindset Video Training Program Updated

ALIVE Active Shooter Survival, an active shooter training provider based in California, recently updated its online video-based training program for surviving active shooter scenarios.

The recently expanded courses utilize a common sense approach based on findings from past active shooter events and research on perpetrator behavior and mentality. Students are taught how to recognize the signs of an attack using a “security mindset” and how to respond adequately to acts of violence.

The program comes in the wake of the numerous tragic mass shootings that marked 2022. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there were 647 mass shootings in the U.S. in the past year alone, the second-highest yearly total in history after the 690 in 2021. While it’s difficult to predict when exactly a mass shooting may occur, some steps can be taken to recognize warning signs, improve decision-making, and ultimately save lives.

ALIVE Active Shooter Survival offers four online courses that teach these lifesaving steps. The Accelerated, Power, and Comprehensive courses are 1, 2, and 3 hours long respectively, and use video-based lessons to teach everything from the “10 Minutes to Live” philosophy to the “5 Lifesaving Steps of A.L.I.V.E.”. They also offer a Lightning course, which is a 20-minute refresher intended to be taken annually, that covers the minimum essential skills.

“The expanded courses aim to empower students and help them overcome the instinct to freeze by teaching them the necessary steps to appropriately respond to threats of violence,” said a spokesperson for the company. “In doing so, they learn not only how to save their own lives and the lives of their families, but also the lives of co-workers, teachers, parishioners, and other bystanders.”

Because active shooter scenarios can occur at any time and in any location, the courses are designed to prepare individuals of all ages, races, religions, and other demographics to identify potential threats. The program also provides location-specific strategies for common targets of active shooters, including schools, hospitals, shopping malls, government facilities, and more.

“Having been in law enforcement and currently working in the security field, I can say unequivocally that these courses are well put together,” said a satisfied student. “They are much more informative than the standard ‘RUN, HIDE, FIGHT’ course of instruction. I would definitely recommend them to others.”
