GirlCratery, a New York-based educational non-profit organization, has announced availability for its activities crate, the Gadgets and Gizmos box, for girls aged 5 to 11. The crates give girls a screen-free source of hands-on “edutainment,” inspiring them to initiate and complete projects on their own.

The latest addition to GirlCratery’s monthly series of hands-on activity boxes inspires tween learners to explore STEM (science, technology, engineering, or math) themes confidently and creatively. The kit contains gadgets to inspire young learners’ imagination, as well as building tools and materials for their own creations.

GirlCratery’s new subscription box includes DIY scribble bot and catapult kits, a light-up LED bracelet, an invisible pen, a light-up gyro wheel, a bendable fidget spinner, 2 themed stickers, and a fun patch. The stickers feature STEM-themed inspirational slogans to help girls share the spirit of educational adventure. Fun patches can be earned for completing activities in the kit.

According to the American Association of University Women (AAUW), parents and teachers today still underestimate girls’ STEM abilities. The Association has also found that women make up only 28 percent of the STEM workforce and that many more men than women major in these fields.

GirlCratery’s Gadgets and Gizmos activity kit aims to help girls discover how to think like engineers through hands-on design challenges that develop their analytical skills. Creating scribble bots by hand, for example, develops kids’ ability to think in 3D and to approach problems from multiple angles.

The kit also includes fidget spinners, whose repetitive motion can aid concentration and provide relief for anxiety and attention disorders. The kit’s light-up gyro wheels can serve a similar purpose while teaching kids how potential energy is converted to kinetic energy and how open and closed circuits work.

About GirlCratery

Inspired by the Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways, GirlCratery’s mission is to help girls build character, confidence, and courage by exploring and striving to improve the world around them. Their subscription boxes encourage girls to make a meaningful difference in their lives by stimulating their natural curiosity and developing their problem-solving skills.

One satisfied parent said, “I loved the creativity that was sparked by the crate that arrived on our doorstep. My daughter used it as a jumping-off point for many projects. You can totally tell this was created with girls in mind.”
