Mental health nonprofit, 29k, publishes its latest article, “5 Reasons why empathy is important in relationships”. The group emphasizes the importance of seeing situations from another person’s perspective.
The recently published guide encourages couples to build empathy for each other to foster better communication. 29k explains that while all relationships can be difficult, couples who are empathetic towards each other typically resolve conflicts faster while preventing future ones from recurring.

One of the healthy practices promoted in 29k’s new report is constant and clear dialogue, especially during a fight. Research suggests that couples with a high degree of empathy for one another have an easier time discussing their frustrations during a conflict and reaching a compromise. Not only does this mean that fights are resolved much more quickly, but it can also make the couple feel closer to each other emotionally.
Further data has found that empathy plays a key role in how satisfied a couple is, with more empathetic couples feeling happier and more in love with their partners. Empathy may also play a role in improving resiliency within the pair, as they are better equipped to withstand challenging events, such as job loss, illness, or financial troubles, 29k notes.
Empathy is a higher form of sympathy, wherein a person can emotionally understand what another person feels and can see things from their point of view. Whereas sympathy is often founded on pity, empathy is often based on compassion. Not only do empathetic people sense what another person is feeling, but they can also imagine how that individual is perceiving their specific situation, according to the report.
As stated in the report, “Empathy is an important ingredient in any relationship—romantic or otherwise. By taking the time to understand how our partner feels and what they need from us, we can create a strong emotional connection that will weather any storm.”
