International Women’s Day 2023

International Women’s Day is a global celebration of women’s achievements and a call to action for gender equality. International Women’s Day, which was celebrated on March 8, 2023, placed a focus on embracing equality, with the hashtag #EmbraceEquity being used by millions of people across the globe.

One area where women are making significant strides is in the area of business, and in particular, in the business world of franchising. The great thing about franchising is that it is a business model that allows entrepreneurs to use an established brand and operating system to start their own businesses. As it is often said, franchising is like being in business for yourself, but not by yourself.

Franchising is an attractive option for women who want to get into business for themselves but may not have the experience or resources to start a company from scratch. By buying into an established franchise, women can benefit from a proven business model, training and support from the franchisor, benefit from a large, often nationwide, marketing strategy, and access to networking with other franchisees.

“Financing options tend to be easier with a well-known franchise,” says Derek Cafferata, CEO and President of franchising experts All State Franchise Finders. “Some franchisors offer in-house financing, while general lenders are more willing to finance a franchise business than a start-up.” The ease of financing a franchise over trying to raise capital or an entrepreneurial start-up business is what attracts many females to the world of franchising.

The franchise business model is a less risky option when it comes to owning a business. Today, there are more women-owned franchise businesses than ever before. According to the International Franchise Association (IFA), women now own almost 29 percent of all franchise units in the United States, an increase of nearly 9 percent over the past 15 years. This trend is not limited to the US. In Canada, approximately 43 percent of franchise businesses are owned by women, and in the United Kingdom around 30 percent of franchise units are female-owned.

Highlighting Women in Business

International Women’s Day was celebrated by many franchise businesses across the country.

“It is a great way to highlight women in business,” says Derek. “It is important to acknowledge and celebrate women who are breaking down barriers within the business world and making their mark in franchising.”

Shelly Sun is one such woman who is making her mark in the business world. CEO and founder of BrightStar Care, a home-care franchise, Sun started the company with her husband in 2002. Today, BrightStar Care has over 340 franchise locations across the Us and Canada. Sun is also a vocal advocate for women entrepreneurs and has been recognized by Forbes as one of the top 50 most powerful women in business.

To ensure more women can succeed in franchising, it is essential to address the unique challenges they face. These include providing more access to capital and promoting gender equality within the industry. By doing so, we can continue to empower women entrepreneurs and make franchising a more diverse and inclusive space.

By supporting women in franchising, we can work towards a gender-equal world where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
