Martlands has defied convention in the Martlands are registered as collectors and disposers of fallen stock and casualty animals with the Fallen Stock company. Further information can be found at https://martlands.co.uk/ and https://martlands.co.uk/service/farm-and-fallen-stock-collection/

Martlands today reflected on its fallen stock collection services, which have been servicing its customers throughout the UK for many years. The main aim was always to comply with Article 21 of the EU Control Regulations which says that fallen stock must be collected, identified and transported without any ‘undue delay’. This means farm and fallen stock collection must be dealt with as soon as is reasonable, and that is where our service comes in. Martlands safely and efficiently collect and deal with the carcass. Where cattle over 48 months are concerned, they must be collected and samples taken by an approved TSE sampling site within 24 hours of the animal’s death…. and by defying convention, this farm and fallen stock collection did so, with a difference.

Paul Martland, Director at Martlands, says: “We wanted to try something new with our fallen stock collection services. Anyone familiar with the Martlands will know that they are registered as collectors and disposers of fallen stock and casualty animals with the Fallen Stock company. Whether you need their service on an ad-hoc basis or under a longer-term contractual arrangement, Martlands are here to help you. The livestock industry can maintain public confidence in our ability to dispose of waste in a safe and sustainable manner by using experts like us for fallen stock management and to comply with all of your legal responsibilities fully. Martlands felt this was a problem because farmers are held responsible in law for the disposal of their own fallen stock. On-farm burial has been banned since 2003 to protect human and animal health.”

So as a welcome breath of fresh air, you can contact Martlands as it is a DEFRA-approved Licensed Sampling Centre to undertake TSE (Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies) brain stem testing of fallen adult cattle (more than 48 months old). Martlands can collect within 24 hours of being notified. The brain stems are removed, and samples are sent to the VLA (Veterinaries Laboratories Agency) in Newcastle by courier. All carcasses are disposed of by rendering and incineration. Martlands chose to expand their fallen stock collection services because currently they cover the Lancashire, Cheshire and South Cumbria areas and include: fully trained staff fully licensed knackers yard radio communication between wagons for a faster service full post-mortem facilities. Martlands is able to process Category 1 animal by product collection and Category 2 animal by product processing.

Paul Martland also said “We want to give our customers options. With our fallen stock collection services, they have a fresh new possibility. We want them to feel confident that their fallen stock is being disposed of legally and ethically when using Fallen Stock Collection. Trying something new is always a risk, but it’s a risk we believe is worth taking.”

Martlands has been in business for over 100 years, being established in 1921. Since Day 1 it has always aimed to stand out from the crowd while also providing its customers with the best possible experience at the best possible value.
