The announcement follows new research highlighting the growing prevalence of OSA among Americans, with 15-30 percent of males and 10-15 percent of females suffering from this condition. Inspire therapy at the Conejo Valley sleep disorders center begins with an initial consultation where Dr. Popper and his team assess a patient’s airway, OSA symptoms, and tolerance for continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy.
Inspire therapy is an effective treatment route for patients who suffer from moderate to severe OSA and cannot handle CPAP therapy. The treatment involves the implantation of the Inspire pulse generator and its sensor and stimulation leads. The device detects the patient’s breathing patterns and delivers mild stimulation to the hypoglossal nerve that controls several vital airway muscles.
Sleep medicine specialists at the Southern California Pulmonary and Sleep Disorders Medical Center have demonstrated that Inspire therapy effectively reduces sleep apnea and daytime drowsiness. Peer-reviewed studies indicate a 78 percent reduction in sleep apnea events every hour.
Dr. Popper says, “Many patients cannot tolerate CPAP and have simply given up on it. Inspire therapy is the first implantable device for treating Obstructive Sleep Apnea. In contrast to CPAP, Inspire works from inside the body with the patient’s natural breathing process. As a result, we’ve seen higher patient satisfaction with Inspire and are excited to offer this new therapy to patients who struggle with CPAP.”
