The National School Chaplain Association (NSCA) has launched its training program that gives participants the opportunity to become certified as in-school chaplains.

The organization offers those interested in starting a new career in education the chance to complete a chaplain certification in 90 days or less. Certified school chaplains provide education, advocacy, life improvement guidance, recovery training, and counsel for Pre-K through 12th-grade teachers, students, and their families.

The organization’s program consists of flexible online training that participants can complete in their own time, support from program advisors, and guidance from the Senior Chaplain Board. Through this training, the NSCA aims to instill in its chaplains the ability to accept people with differences, a sense of humility, modesty, and respect, and the capacity to have empathy while maintaining emotional stability.

Based on school-reported data, the NSCA estimates that the social impact of its chaplaincy program has led to a 37% increase in graduation rates, higher teacher retention, greater school safety, and improved motivation and goal-setting for students. At the same time, schools that have incorporated chaplains have reported a 37% decrease in dropout rates, less drug and alcohol consumption, fewer bullying and discipline problems, and an 80% reduction in teen pregnancies.

Individuals interested in pursuing a career as a school chaplain can apply on the NSCA website to determine the level of training they’ll need to become certified. To begin, participants will complete an 8-week online course, at their own pace. From here, participants go through school safety courses and comprehensive background checks.

Founded in 1999, the NSCA has certified over 27,000 chaplains in 23 countries, with over 4,000 certifications awarded in the last year. The organization works in partnership with the Oral Roberts University to offer fully accredited training. It strives to foster healthy spiritual practice in communities across the U.S. while offering a fulfilling career path in chaplaincy.

“The National School Chaplain Association is committed to developing the highest quality chaplains who positively impact our schools and communities around the world,” said one spokesperson for the organization. “We’re proud of the partnership we have with each of our candidates in helping them begin their career in ministry through chaplaincy. We deliver a solid foundation of proven chaplaincy skills and strategies necessary to feel confident in your calling.”
