The FMCSA-approved ELD must take under a minute to power on when the engine starts and should be fully functional throughout the drive.

The ELD system must issue a warning if the truck driver does not log in and should be able to automatically detect ECM (Electronic Control Module) data, including engine power, motion status, and CMV position. It should also automatically record the time, date, and geographic location without any assistance from the driver. This includes checking your compliance reporting requirements, like log auditing, messaging, driver reviews, automatic calculation of IFTA reports, alerts, vehicle diagnosis, and GPS tracking,  

Installation Process

Generally, electronic logging devices are plugged into the truck’s OBD (Onboard Diagnostics) port, which synchronizes with the fleet’s engine and automatically records information when the truck is operational. When choosing an ELD system for your trucking business, ensure it is compatible with your fleet and offers easy installation.
