A new guide by moving specialists at Movers.com explains how to properly pack and protect a dining room set during an interstate move.

While the dining room is usually the easiest room to pack, since it doesn’t have that many items of furniture and knick-knacks, Movers.com knows that, for many homeowners, it is also the room which holds the most precious and expensive piece of furniture – the dining room set. As such, in the new guide, the moving experts explain how to protect the dining room set from damage during transport.

Ever since June published its 2019 survey which revealed that only 48% of Americans used their dining room, this once focal point of American homes has been falling out of favor with each passing year. Movers.com believes that, because the dining room is so rarely used in the modern era, it is the perfect room to start the packing process.

The moving specialists suggest starting with the dining room table, which should be disassembled for easier packing, loading, and transportation. Once disassembled, all individual pieces should be packed separately. For glass tabletops, Movers.com recommends moving pads and bubble wrap; the former will prevent the bubble wrap from leaving impressions while the latter will protect the glass from getting scratched or cracked.

For wood surfaces, including wooden tabletops, the guide suggests using furniture pads or moving blankets before plastic wrapping to avoid damage to the wood’s finish. Protective corners are also recommended as an additional layer of protection.

When it comes to chairs, Movers.com also advises disassembling the pieces and using bubble wrap for packing. Alternatively, movers can pack the entire chair using furniture blankets and tape.

Along with packing advice, the full guide includes tips on loading the dining room set onto the truck, for those planning a DIY move. If, however, movers prefer to leave everything – or part of the moving process – to the professionals, Movers.com can provide up to seven no-cost estimates from licensed and insured moving companies.
