As researchers explore integrating DDL in the field of AI and other emerging fields, Dr. Wright cautions against unrealistic expectations. “Decentralization via blockchains and AI via deep learning are major research and develop trends in modern technology that converge in DDL,” he explains.

However, he notes that clear rationale criteria are needed to determine when DDL can be a design solution. “The excitement of researchers and technologies for new technologies have led to cycles of unrealistic expectations,” he adds.

Dr. Wright cautions that while optimism is high, the path for emerging technologies is never smooth. He points out that new challenges arise and frameworks must evolve to address issues.

He has included four inquiries to help determine whether or not DDL should be considered. This begins with whether or not the objectives have an explicit requirement for decentralization. He then questions the involvement of stakeholders, as multiple stakeholders are more likely to benefit than a single individual. Moreover, if the data or AI algorithm is already partly decentralized, this can also create a stronger case for DDL.

Dr. Wright brings a diverse background spanning technology, business, and law to his perspectives on decentralized artificial intelligence. With degrees in engineering, business, law, and a Ph.D., as well as experience as an entrepreneur and professor, he analyzes the intersection of blockchain, machine learning, and public policy from multiple vantage points.
