Mr Steven Sher, founder of Paddington Jeweller said this when interviewed by Eleven Media on falling diamond prices, “LAB grown diamonds are produced at a fraction of the cost of those produced by mother nature & are virtually indistinguishable from them. The demand for natural diamonds is falling fast, to the point that Fortune Media is reporting De Beers is cutting some prices by more than 40%. Falling prices are expected to continue.”
Fortune Media stated in their recent article on falling diamond prices, that about five years ago, lab grown gems sold at about a 20% discount to natural diamonds. This has now blown out to around 80% as global retailers push them to increasingly lower prices and the cost of making them falls. The price of polished stones in the wholesale market has fallen by more than half this year alone.
LAB grown diamonds, also known as LAB created diamonds or man-made diamonds, are grown in highly controlled laboratory environments using advanced technology processes that duplicate the conditions under which diamonds have naturally developed over millions of years beneath the earth’s crust. These LAB created diamonds consist of actual carbon atoms arranged in the characteristic diamond structure. Since they are made of the same material as mother earth diamonds, they exhibit virtually the same optical and chemical properties.
No human, no matter how experienced in diamonds can distinguish the difference between a LAB grown diamond or a mined diamond.
