How Automatic Pool Covers Work – Simplifying Pool Care

(Newswire.net — March 11, 2019) — There are plenty of positive things to say about automatic pool covers. These covers have a considerable role to play in preventing dirt and debris from falling into the water, a benefit that saves both time and money that would otherwise go into servicing pools, chemical treatment and filtration. But how do automatic pool covers work?

How Automatic Pool Covers Work

First things first, a pool cover stabilizes the water temperature, eliminating the frequent need to use a water pump or other electric heating source. Also, pool covers prevent the evaporation of pool water into the atmosphere. High humidity levels are a common indicator that your pool is evaporating at a high rate.

Once you activate a pool cover, the pool somewhat magically covers your pool. But what’s the working mechanism behind the automatic pool cover. Most pool covers will have what is commonly referred to as a leading edge tube. This refers to the section of the pool where the cover will be attached to. The pool cover’s two edges will run on two parallel tracks that run on either side of the pool. Depending on the pool design, the parallel tracks can either be on the inside of the pool’s edges or mounted on the pools visible side (on the pool deck).

At the back of the pool where the cover attaches to, there’s an aluminum tube. The idea is that the tube should be able to roll on and off the pool easily.

The Mechanism Behind This Type of Pool Cover

The pool cover’s mechanism is comprised of a series of interlocking gears. Once the gears are activated, they automatically spin the heavy aluminum tube, consequently, rolling on/off the pool cover.

The gears may be powered by either a hydraulic system or powered by electricity (thanks to an automatic pool cover motor).

Big pools will often use a hydraulic system or where the motor is not available next to the pool

Automatic pool covers are beneficial because they offer the benefit of convenience, plus they are money and time-saving. Once you have an automatic pool cover, you get to enjoy its immediate benefits.

The reason for the relative stagnation in terms of working mechanism has less to do with a deficit of creativity but rather the fact that pool covers are quite simple and for decades they’ve been good at exactly what they do.

Unlike the electronics industry where you can notice changes every week, how automatic pool covers work has rarely changed. The major development has been in extrusion technology, which has opened up a broad range of application possibilities. Where once automatic pool covers were strictly used on concrete pools they can now be applied to other types of pools such as vinyl and fiberglass pools.

Bottom Line

One of the most exciting facts about how automatic pool covers work is that they haven’t changed much over the years. Despite incremental changes in motor technology, track systems, and vault concealment systems, and the fact that they come in a broader range of colors, they’ve remained basically the same even though they continue to gain popularity.
