(Newswire.net — July 24, 2019) — Why fundraise? There are numerous reasons why one might fundraise, but according to a study conducted by JustGiving, there are three major factors that stand out: to raise awareness of the charity, if they want to do more for the charity, and simply to raise as much funds as possible.

Why Fundraise?

So, why fundraise? There are three major factors as to why people fundraise: to raise awareness, if they want to do more for an organization or a charity or to simply raise as many funds as possible.

The Study

The study has 101 survey questions and the initial results show that a quarter of respondents said it was necessary and meaningful to raise money in memory of somebody, although a similar number of respondents cited this reason as unimportant.

71% of the research’s respondents said they had raised money within the recent 3 years. However, a large majority of those who hadn’t done fundraising stated that they preferred giving directly to a cause or charity. A small portion thought it was too public an endeavor, while twenty per cent said they could not raise funds.

There is no magic wand that makes people engage in fundraising for a certain organization. 90% mentioned that they participate based on the mission, cause and purpose of fundraising for charity. 78% said that they will do it if they knew the charity will efficiently and effectively use the money. Jonathan Waddingham, JustGiving’s digital strategist, said at the IoF London’s First Thursday meeting that, “It’s not rocket science. We always thought this would be why people choose to fundraise, and now we know it’s true.”

What’s also interesting is the reasons that are not important to people, such as 20% said that it’s not important to have a personal or direct connection with the charity. “We had always assumed at JustGiving that there would be some personal connection to most people’s fundraising, so this came as a bit of a surprise,” Waddingham added.

Another finding by the research which came as a surprise was that the major reason people heard about the charity they were raising money for was because they’ve given to them before –60% of which had heard about the charity through friends or family. This is a very important point to include in any fundraising ideas: donor care is crucial and it benefits fundraising events. Thanking procedures have to be done right. Waddingham explained, “Donor care has to be at the heart of our fundraising.”

Noting how people heard of charities must be integrated into your top methods of fundraising. If it’s through word-of-mouth, it’s hugely important to make sure people have a pleasant experience. This good experience serves as a recommendation for the next person.

Waddingham stated, “We quite often find people raise loads of money online and don’t get thanked properly. These people are so much more valuable than someone giving a one-off gift from a direct mail pack, for example, and we need to make sure we look after them well.”

JustGiving developed the survey, in partnership with three universities: Bristol and Warwick in the UK and McMasters in Canada. They sent out the survey to 47,000 people who had used JustGiving as fundraisers, donors, or other ways, and 1,045 responded. This investigation will help understand how to motivate fundraising team and many other aspects of fundraising. They are further analyzing the findings and the full results will be shared at a later date.
