(Newswire.net — April 28, 2020) — April 19 marks the start of the U.S. Money Reserve’s Coin Week offering. As part of the special offering, U.S. Money Reserve is debuting a 75th Anniversary Iwo Jima coin series. The series is part of a collaboration with the Perth Mint in Australia. The purpose of the collaboration is to mint a series of coin sets honoring historic events from World War II.

The collaboration is part of a continued effort to highlight the importance of veterans and their sacrifices. As Roberts puts it, “There’s no question: Veterans are the backbone of this country.” The Iwo Jima bullion coins are the first in this series. There is a one-ounce silver bullion coin and one-ounce gold bullion coin that both depict the iconic image of U.S. soldiers raising the American flag at the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II.
The Battle of Iwo Jima took place in 1945, late in World War II, and the battle lasted from February 19 to March 26. The capture of Iwo Jima served as a strategic turning point in the war because it allowed the Allied forces to control Pacific airspace a mere 700 miles from coastal Japan. Photographer Joe Rosenthal made the battle—and one moment in particular—iconic with a photograph of U.S. soldiers raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima’s highest peak. The photo “The Raising of the Flag at Iwo Jima” won a Pulitzer Prize, and in the 75 years since that event, it has become one of the defining visual moments of a war that lasted six years, involved 30 countries, and was the most destructive war in modern history.
“The Raising of the Flag at Iwo Jima” proved so inspiring as a testament to American perseverance and a renewed hope for world peace that U.S. citizens purchased $35 million in war bonds. The image of American soldiers lifting the flag has been further immortalized with the model at the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia, in honor of all Marines who have fought and died in war.
On the reverse side of the 75th Anniversary of Iwo Jima coins is an embossed image honoring two of the United States’ wartime allies: Australia and Great Britain. A portrait of Queen Elizabeth II graces the coin as well.
