How Does Water Heater Work?

(Newswire.net — September 4, 2020) — The general structure of the water heater is the same for all models. The boiler consists of a tank, which consists of a decorative casing, and a heater is laid between them. It looks like a thermos. The main difference between boilers with reservoirs is what kind of heater they have: an electric heater or a gas burner.

Heating appliances differ in the type of installation. Vertical boilers take up a lot of space, which is why they are placed in a spacious room. For a small room, a horizontal boiler is more suitable. The latter option is inconvenient in terms of use. A horizontal hot water heater has a quick mixing of hot and cold liquid. As a result, when the tap is opened, boiling water flows, and after about a minute cooler one begins to run.

Typical Water Heater Components

  • The heating appliance is made of definite elements that simultaneously interact. So, the essential components of the boiler are:
  • The basis of the boiler is a tank. In household models, its capacity is limited to approximately 80 gallons, typically. A tank is made of stainless steel or steel. To prevent the metal from rusting, glass enamel, glass porcelain or titanium spraying are used as an internal coating.
  • The tank is enclosed in an external decorative case. It can be of stainless steel, ordinary steel with an enamel coating or plastic.
  • Between the storage tank and the outer casing, space is filled with a heat-insulating material – polyurethane foam.
  • The front area of the outer casing of the heater is equipped with a thermometer.
  • The heating element is the heart of the boiler. The electric water heater works from the built-in element – a tubular electric heater. Gas boilers are equipped with a burner and chimney.
  • At the bottom of the water heater type, hot and cold fluid pipes exit. A safety valve as well as a non-return valve are installed on the cold water pipe. The first opens from the excess of fluid pressure inside the tank. The second does not allow the liquid to leave the tank in the absence of pressure in the fluid supply. The hot water pipe is connected to the intake pipe.
  • The electronic unit is designed to control the operation of the water heater. It receives a signal from a thermostat, whose sensors are installed inside the tank.
  • The magnesium anode protects the steel tank of the boiler from electrochemical corrosion, giving away ions.

Installation and operation of any water heater is not a great problem for the user. The device is attached to the wall with brackets. The supply pipe can only be connected to a cold liquid pipe. This is the principle of operation of the boiler since it is precisely cold water that is heated in it.

If you are not a handy man and want to finish with water heater installation quickly – finding a contractor is the best way out of the situation.

Principle of Water Heater Operation

The main principle of the water heater with a tank is the layer-by-layer separation of liquids of different temperatures. According to the law of physics, warm fluid is at the top and the cold one is at the bottom. For a complete picture of how the boiler works, let us consider in order all the actions:

When you open the water tap, water consumption begins. The upper layers of hot liquid from the boiler tank through the intake pipe are sent to the pipeline.

  • The pressure inside the tank becomes less than in the supply pipe. The non-return valve opens and cold water replenishment begins. When the pressure of the water supply system and inside the hot water heater tank becomes equal, the check valve closes. During recharge, cold fluid does not mix with hot water thanks to a divider mounted on the end of the supply pipe. To install the boiler correctly consider finding a contractor.
  • A sensor signals the entry of cold water into the tank. It instructs the control unit to turn on the heating.
  • Electricity is supplied to the heater, and the water is heated to a predetermined temperature. In a gas water heater, instead of electricity, gas is supplied to the burner. When the water heats up to the desired temperature, the thermostat turns off the heating element.

In the operation of the hot water heater, a continuous cycle occurs. The collected hot liquid is constantly replaced by cold water. Thermal insulation under the hood prevents rapid cooling. Water remains warm for 2-3 days.

The boiler must be correctly selected in terms of power and volume. With a large analysis of water, a low-power model will not cope with heating. At the outlet, the liquid will not correspond to the set temperature. Finding a contractor is able to resolve all the issues with the heating devices.
