In the real world, the main protagonist experienced the real psychological trauma of losing both parents and has to cope with it while living in a small room beneath the stairs in the house of his not so loving aunt and uncle. Instead of having magical powers, the boy actually suffers from a trauma-induced mental illness and is delusional, according to a different insight.
