(Newswire.net — December 6, 2019) — America is looking to the cosmos as a hotbed of military operations and planning future combat operations, Russian President Vladimir Putin said. He added that NATO is eyeballing the cosmos as a new operational sphere, CBS reports.

“The world’s leading countries are actively reviewing dual-purpose space systems” Mr. Putin said referring to both civilian and military purposes of new space technology created by the West.

The US military-political leadership openly views the cosmos as a scene of military action, said the President of the Russian Federation, pointing a finger at the US. “To maintain superiority in this area, the United States is rapidly creating space forces that are already conducting operational preparations,” Putin said.

He stressed that the deployment of a high-speed space communications complex in geostationary orbit has been completed in Russia, adding that Russia is seeking to create a foundation for the future in this field. Mr. Putin also said that companies are starting to manufacture devices using Russian components.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has previously stated that the North Atlantic Alliance has recognized the cosmos as a new operational sphere, meaning that all space assets will be available to the Alliance, both in peacetime and in times of war. “Space is part of our daily life here on Earth. It can be used for peaceful purposes. But it can also be used aggressively,” he said.

For Russian experts, this statement clearly points to future developments, especially when we consider that NATO and Alliance countries have opposed all efforts by Moscow to reach an agreement to ban the deployment of weapons in space.

The lack of mutual trust and politicians’ avarice have led to a situation of high risk of a nuclear disaster now that is even greater than it was during the Cold War, former Pentagon chief William Perry said.

“We are on the verge of a new Cold War” Perry said. He added that the US and Russia are equipping their nuclear arsenal, wasting incredible resources, making the World threatened by a new Cold War.

“The danger of a nuclear disaster is greater today than it was during the Cold War,” Perry said.

The U.S. is a space militarization leader with 166 military satellites, according to the Libertarian Republic who cited data from the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS). Russia and China have the next largest constellations at 89 and 84 military satellites.

“Over the past 60 years, the United States has assembled the largest and most sophisticated constellation of military and intelligence satellites in the world,” Vice President Mike Pence said.
