The iProfiler is an amazing piece of optometric technology which allows your eye doctor to diagnose eye conditions before they truly become a problem.

The following is a helpful Q&A about the iProfiler with Dr. James R. Brauss from Island City Eyecare in Wilton Manors, Florida.

Q) Please describe what the iProfiler is used for and give a basic sense of how it works.

The Iprofiler is revolutionary technology which provides a “fingerprint” of your eye that helps our doctors provide a precise prescription to help deliver the best vision possible for you, the patients.

Q) Why is corneal topography important, what extra components of the cornea and eye does it allow you to examine?

Corneal topography gives the doctor more information to more precisely evaluate corneal health and maintenance of corneal health. It provides more information to better fit and follow up contact lens wear.

Q) What types of eye diseases and disorders can be discovered?

Keratoconus, which is a degenerative disorder of the eye in which structural changes within the cornea cause it to thin and change to a more conical shape than the more normal gradual curve.

Keratoconus can cause substantial distortion of vision, with multiple images, streaking and sensitivity to light all often reported by the patient. It is typically diagnosed in the patient’s adolescent years. If afflicting both eyes, the deterioration in vision can affect the patient’s ability to drive a car or read normal print.

Q) Most practices in your area do not have this technological capability.  What is it about this particular technology that you find most exciting; the component that made you feel you need to invest in this for your practice?

The technology combines wavefront technology, corneal topography and autorefraction in one to give us more precise and pertinent information in order for us to continue to provide high quality care to our patients.

Q) Can you describe the patient experience when using the iProfiler?

For the patient, a comfortable, efficient, painless and minimal time span experience.

Q) Do the patients that walk through your doors day in and day out, appreciate the upgrade in technology?

Our patients appreciate that we strive to provide new technology to insure the best care possible is provided to them.

Q) How does this technology improve comprehensive eye exams?

The technology gives us more information so we can be confident we are doing our best for our patients.

Q) Can you share a particular story in which, by using the added capabilities of the iProfiler, you were able to detect and treat a disease that would have otherwise gone undetected?

Male patient, age 31, presented with a recent blurred vision in the left eye. Eyeglasses and contact lenses prescription were made with 20/20 vision in both eyes. Four months later, patient reported blurry vision in left eye again. With a second testing on the iprofiler, right eye was stable. The left eye corneal topography had changed suggesting a diagnosis of early keratoconus.
