(Newswire.net — May 16, 2014) THOMSON, Ill. — A series of May tornadoes that killed more than 30 people across the United States also left more than 200,000 without power, forcing home owners to find matches and flashlights all while preparing for a potential twister blocks away.

In Alabama alone, around 107,000 customers were left without electricity, while in Georgia more than 75,000 lost power and in Mississippi nearly 40,000. But it wasn’t simply the South. Severe thunderstorms in Michigan knocked out power to around 10,000 in the Detroit area.

An Illinois company believes it has a simple solution that can help in such situations – a new multi-use special LED light bulb that can be screwed into any socket and will turn on when the power goes out. It also doubles as a flashlight. Perhaps even better, the bulb – which has a rechargeable polymer lithium-ion battery inside – includes a USB socket that can be used to charge a smartphone, tablet or any device that uses a USB cord.

And when the power’s on? The bulb can be recharged in remote locations – such as on camping, hiking, hunting and boating trips – with the accompanying mini solar panel, which is simply a smaller version of larger solar panels.

The entire package is called the “World’s Smallest Solar Generator,” and for about the price of a restaurant meal ($29.95), it will get anyone ready for the next power outage.

“Often in a blackout situation, just lighting something back up can mean the difference between panic and a sense of safety, security and calm,” said Bill Heid, president of Solutions From Science, the company which sells the product.
