(Newswire.net — September 18, 2014) Fairfax , VA — A brilliant new study found in the Journal of Psychiatric Research shows that patients who are injected with Botox benefit from a significant improvement in the symptoms of depression.
One of the biggest randomized, blind, study control groups ever recorded on the effects of Botox and Placebo injections on depression was performed earlier this year with some amazing results. The researchers which performed the study found over fifty percent of the subjects who were battling moderate to severe depression had an incredible improvement in their symptoms of depression, this was measured using the MADRS scale and was greater than or equal to 50% of the baseline.
The research was performed by Dr. Eric Finzi MD, PhD and Dr. Norman E. Rosenthal MD. It was published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research and was done on 74 patients suffering from depression. The patients were injected with a single injection of either Botox or placebo. The results were profound, out of the patients who were injected with the Botox serum 47 percent showed improvements in their symptoms, whereas only about 21 percent of those injected with the placebo showed improvement. The research also showed excellent results in the remission of the symptoms as well for those of the Non placebo injections, 27% for the Botox and 7% for the placebo.
The Doctors are excited as the research shows that the drug may be used as a standalone treatment in the fight against depression.
The trials were used to determine as to how the inhibition of facial frowning by the Botox injections could improve the overall symptoms of depression. And the results spoke for them; the doctors found that patients with paralyzed muscles in the face often suffer from an overwhelming feeling of sadness. They also found that patients with over-exaggerated frown lines also suffered more often from intense feelings of sadness. This suggested what many doctors already believe, that the facial expressions have a direct effect on the way a person feels. Botox was able to effectively able to correct many of these facial expressions and give the patients a more relaxed feeling in the face which improved their personal feeling of well-being and happiness.
Another Doctor, Erika Wasserman performed a separate study case on ten patients suffering from moderate to severe depression symptoms as evaluated by the guidelines of the DSM-IV as well as the BDI-II. After two months of the injections the research found that nine out of ten of the depressed patients had shown great signs of improvement. Another mention exciting doctors is that the injections are considered to be much safer than medications which have no effect on some patient’s altogether.
