Melissa started with the internet marketing company in 2008 as an intern, and today, she has worked her way up to CEO and part-owner of the company. Entrepreneurial dreams from the start
Melissa comes from a long line of entrepreneurs. She grew up dreaming of owning her own business, even though she was told that being a business owner means no vacation and living for work 24/7.
“Owning your own business is part of the American Dream,” Melissa said. “I was willing to put in the work because, eventually, the work pays off. Once you arrive, you have all this freedom. I wanted to have that to pass on to my daughter.”
Leading this internet marketing firm from day one
In her initial interview with Lee back in 2008, Melissa told him, “I’ll work for you, but only if you teach me how to run my own business.” He told her he’d do everything in his power to make that happen.
For the past 7 years, Lee involved Melissa in all the major decisions in the company so she could learn the ropes of running a business. Lee’s mentorship and Melissa’s dedication to hard work have paid off for both of them today.
“Melissa has been my right-hand woman for almost eight years and the interim CEO in training for the last two,” Lee said. “I am so proud of her and all she has accomplished. GetUWired is in wonderful hands, and we are excited about the direction Melissa is taking the company.”
Melissa helped build GetUWired
Melissa has been an integral part of GetUWired since she joined the team. She’s done accounting, training, hiring, firing, and developed the processes that make GetUWired run smoothly day after day. Melissa was GetUWired’s original project manager and created that job description from scratch. She knows every inch of this company because she helped to build it.
The Leadership Team
As the CEO, Melissa is still a part of the GetUWired Leadership Team, which also includes Director of Business Development Dobbin Buck, Lead Developer Bobby Brown, and Founder Lee Goff. The Leadership Team democratically makes all the major decisions for GetUWired.
“I’m backed by an amazing team,” Melissa said. “It’s not like this is the kind of company where there is one captain steering the ship. I have an awesome Leadership Team behind me. Any one of them is willing to do whatever it takes.”
Lee is passing the torch to pursue other projects
Lee is a serial entrepreneur, and he wanted the freedom to pursue other interests and spend more time with his daughter, so passing the CEO torch to Melissa only made sense. He will still stay intimately involved in the day-to-day workings of GetUWired, from being an active member of the Leadership Team to monitoring KPIs and more. Lee has no intention of becoming a silent partner in the business be built from the ground up.
“Lee is the visionary,” Melissa said. “He’s great at finding the right people and training them to run his company. He’s done that, and now those people are taking his vision and bringing it to life. Lee is still our visionary leader, but he’s done his job so well that he’s now free to do other things.”
His current projects involve creating digital assets and mentoring other small business owners on how to succeed in today’s digital business climate.
