(Newswire.net — September 19, 2016) Winnetka, IL — Insomnia and anxiety are conditions that may not be life-threatening but may significantly reduce the quality of life of sufferers. There are pharmaceutical drugs available but there are also certain natural alternatives thought to be helpful for these conditions.

Ashwagandha is believed to be one of the best natural alternatives for insomnia and anxiety. Today, the number of people who suffer from these conditions could almost reach to epidemic levels due to the pressures of the modern life.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, there are between 50 to 70 million adults in the United States alone who suffer from sleep disorders.

Sleep disorders do not just cause daytime fatigue and impaired concentration, but are also believed to contribute to the increase in industrial and automobile accidents. They may even increase the risk of dangerous medical conditions, such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, depression, and cancer.

The ashwagandha root has long been believed to offer calming effects, especially by naturopathic practitioners and Ayurveda healers. This shrub belongs to a nigh shade family, and is also known as winter cherry and Indian ginseng.

In Ayurveda medicine, this herb is thought to significantly help boost immune system health, promote longevity, and aid in the body’s ability to adapt to stress.

For many centuries, this herb has been utilized for symptoms and complications associated with infectious diseases, inflammatory conditions, and fevers. It has also been believed to be effective in elevating mood, fighting panic attacks, alleviating insomnia, and reducing depression as well as anxiety.

According to animal and human studies, ashwagandha may offer antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, adaptogenic, and antimicrobial benefits. It is also popularized by the potential anti-anxiety and mood-elevating properties it may offer.

Medical researchers reveal that the possible relaxant properties of ashwagandha may be due to a group of alkaloids called withanolides. Its potential ability to encourage the state of relaxation may also be due to sitoindosides, saponins, and other assorted minerals.

In a well-designed clinical study, which was published in the PLOS One peer-reviewed journal in 2009, the researchers dosed the subjects with 300 milligrams of ashwagandha root two times a day.

The participants were sufferers of moderate to severe anxiety. The control group received a standard psychotherapy designed to reduce anxiety.

The researchers, through the use of a diagnostic tool called the Beck Anxiety Inventory, revealed that the ashwagandha group achieved greater clinical benefit with anxiety reduction by 50% compared to the psychotherapy group.
