The recently announced PAP therapy consists of CPAP and BiPAP therapies and is used to treat individuals who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea. CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) is the most common form of PAP therapy that is used to treat the condition.

A representative for Home Medical Products pointed out that despite CPAP being the most popular form of therapy, various types of PAP devices can treat the condition. The form of therapy to be used to treat patients depends on their situation and their doctor’s prescription.

The the forms of PAP therapy are similar in appearance and function. This means that they are each used by being connected to standard tubing and masks to provide pressurized air to the airways.

Sleep apnea causes an individual’s breathing to temporarily stop then restart during sleep. This breathing obstruction is often manifested through snoring and also causes one to unconsciously awake at various times during the night. The pressure from PAP therapy helps to open one’s airways, thus preventing breathing and sleep obstructions.

Though similar in appearance and function, the PAP therapy forms can be differentiated by determining whether the pressure they deliver is constant or varying during sleep. The difference is also seen in how each works while a sleeping individual inhales and exhales.

When the CPAP therapy is used the pressure level from the device is constant throughout the night, as prescribed by a sleep apnea doctor. This level generally falls between four to 20cmH20 pressure.

“For example, if you are on 10cmH20, your machine delivers a constant pressure of 10 to your upper airways while you breathe in and out and does not change throughout the night. This pressure level was decided during your sleep study as the pressure needed to keep events (apneas and hypopneas) from happening while you sleep. CPAP therapy is the most common treatment for obstructive sleep apnea and the most economical of the PAP devices,” the representative explained.
