A Published Research Now Reveals Link Between Sleep-Related Brain Activity and Alzheimer’s

A study was carried out and published in the open-access journal called PLOS Biology. 

It was performed by Xiao Liu and colleagues at The Pennsylvania State University.

It has shown a link between sleep-dependent low-frequency (<0.1 Hz) global brain activity and the clearance of Alzheimer’s disease-related toxin buildup.

According to researchers, this neuronal activity was more strongly associated with cerebrospinal fluid flow in healthy controls than higher-risk groups and patients. 

The onset of Alzheimer’s disease is thought to be driven by the accumulation of the toxic proteins amyloid-β and tau in the brain. It is worth keeping in mind that the glymphatic system of the brain actually plays a crucial role in the clearance of these toxins.

Previous research studies have demonstrated there is a potential link between sleep-dependent global brain activity and the glymphatic system.

The investigators used 118 subjects in the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative project.

In this research, they measured global brain activity and cerebrospinal fluid flow and looked at behavioral data at the same time. The subjects underwent resting-state fMRI sessions two years apart.

The team made a comparison in between their findings with neurobiological and neuropsychological markers associated with Alzheimer’s disease, such as levels of amyloid-β.

They found that the strength of association between brain activity and cerebrospinal fluid flow was weaker in those at a higher risk or who had already developed Alzheimer’s disease. Further, the weaker link correlated with increased levels of amyloid-β and disease-related behavioral measures two years later. 

This indicates the essential role of sleep-dependent global brain activity in the clearance of brain waste.
