Surgery May Not Be the Best Immediate Solution for Back Pain

(Newswire.net — June 1, 2018) Las Vegas, NV — Today, there are many people who instantly turn to surgery due to back pain. While it is potentially helpful, it appears that it may not be the most ideal remedy for the condition.

Surgery may not be the best immediate solution for back pain. Lower back pain happens to anyone at any point of life. It is often the reason why people are unable to go to work. While there are prescription medications and procedures available for the condition, only a few of these options are actually proven to be safe and effective to use.

According to Roger Chou, MD, Oregon Health and Science University’s primary care physician, many treatments have long been thought to be the next miracle cure for back pain. However, none of these so-called cures actually work.

There are many individuals who visit their doctor due to agonizing pain and immobility. Health care providers even send them for an MRI scan to diagnose the condition.

Dr. Chou specializes in treating patients with low back pain and stated history of low back pain management.

In a study, it was found that in three individuals over 60 years old, none had back pain but one had herniated or slipped disks. This is believed to be the reason why sufferers of lower back pain who undergo surgery and get MRI still obtain similar results as those who are unable to get scanned.

The truth is that in many people, discomfort doesn’t result from the wear and tear in the spine.

According to the Arthritis Foundation, there are treatments or remedies available for low back pain. This includes physical activities, such as aerobic exercises, stretching and resistance training.

In a large review, it was found that both stretching and strengthening could enhance low back pain by 19 points based on a 100-point scale.

However, it is worth remembering that there are certain activities like jerking motions that could aggravate back pain. Further, experts discourage resistance training in individuals with low back pain.

Pain is often linked with inflammation, and this is why many arthritis sufferers turn to the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These medications are formulated to fight pain and inflammation, which are often experienced by athletes and individuals with arthritis.

Since NSAIDs can cause side effects, there are many pain sufferers who turn to the use of natural anti-inflammatories, such as curcumin. This phytochemical can be found in the ancient, medicinal spice called turmeric.

Turmeric has long been known for its medicinal effects. There are many individuals who turn to safer alternatives, such as curcumin supplements, than NSAIDs and other pain medications.
