According to Medicare agent Paul Barrett, Medicare’s open enrollment periods can be very confusing, and this often leads to lost opportunities for a more comprehensive and cost efficient coverage.

His services include examining a client’s existing Medicare Advantage insurance plan and reviewing how well it fits in the client’s health and budget needs for the year. He can also recommend changes to the client’s coverage to better address their needs while keeping their costs down.

Paul says the Medicare Advantage open enrollment period is not as well known as the Medicare annual enrollment period that occurs from October 15 to December 7 of each year. In the annual enrollment period, seniors can join, change, or drop a Medicare Advantage plan or Prescription Drug Plan (Plan D), with the new coverage taking effect on January 1 of the following year.

During the Medicare Advantage open enrollment period, which takes place from January 1 to March 31, Medicare Advantage plan holders can make one change in their policy to take effect the following month.

The aim of the open enrollment period is to give Medicare beneficiaries one last opportunity to review their existing plan and switch to another Medicare Advantage Plan or to Original Medicare if they choose. This is particularly important if there were changes to an individual’s Medicare plan that went unnoticed until they took effect in January.

Paul’s services include comparing clients’ old and new coverages to identify any changes that may have a significant impact on the members’ benefits. Some of the most crucial changes include increased premiums, doctors or pharmacies moving out of the network, increased drug costs, medications that are no longer covered by the plan, and so on.

Paul can also assist Medicare members who want to change their plan or join another network but missed doing this during the open enrollment period.
