Researchers Now Shed Light on the Usefulness of Fertility Apps

According to experts, it is not unusual for women of their reproductive age to see a gynecologist or a clinician evaluate their menstrual health and fertility. However, there are also what is so-called the “fertility awareness method” (FAM) apps.

The World Health Organization study reveals that in 190 countries, the overall burden of infertility in women has stayed the same in estimated levels and trends from 1990 to 2010.

According to research, one in every four couples dwelling in developing countries are infertile. Experts warn that infertility has actually become more common than most people think. The large-scale study was carried out by Laura Symul at EPFL’s Digital Epidemiology Lab together with Stanford University. 

This research involved 200,000 users of two FAM apps, which offer support to the “Sympto-Thermal Method.” They also work in identifying the fertile and infertile times of a woman’s menstrual cycle. 

This is done by considering the recordings of body temperature at wake-up, cervical fluid, and other biological signs. The investigators monitored over 30 million days of observations based on more than 2.7 million menstrual cycles. 

The study findings have particularly shown that women who wanted to get pregnant recorded Sympto-Thermal measurements every single day for up to 40 percent of their menstrual cycles.
