New Strong Evidence Links Retail Meat With UTIs

(Newswire.net — October 14, 2021) Orlando, FL — Over the years, researchers have been looking into the various aspects of urinary tract infections (UTIs). There are different risk factors of this infection that experts have been warning against.

One study has shown that intake of chicken sold in supermarkets, restaurants, and other outlets may increase the odds of young women for UTIs. 

This study was carried out by McGill researcher Amee Manges in collaboration with the Public Health Agency of Canada and the University of Guelph.

They took samples in the Montreal area between 2005 and 2007. The findings provided strong new evidence that E.coli bacteria coming from food causes common UTIs. However, it is also worth keeping in mind consumption of contaminated meat or food does not directly result in UTI. 

Experts say that E.coli can actually live in the intestine without producing issues. However in women, the bacteria reach the vagina from the anus and to the urethra during sex, and this leads to the development of an infection.

The investigating team also investigated whether livestock may be passing antimicrobial-resistant on to humans. This happens because the use of antibiotics has the ability to treat or prevent disease in animals. 

Further, this type of medication also enhances their growth and this results in antimicrobial resistance. Meat can be contaminated with these bacteria when animals are slaughtered and their meat is processed. 

“These studies might open the door to discussions with policymakers,” Manges said, “about how antibiotics are used in agriculture in Canada. It’s certainly something we need to continue studying.”

The investigators say that while some infections produced by E.coli are resistant to certain antibiotics, the infections are still treatable. They hope that understanding the manner these bacteria are transmitted may aid in lessening infection.
