Experts Warn Extra Sleep on the Weekends Doesn’t Compensate Sleep Debt

(Newswire.net — October 29, 2021) Orlando, FL — Health authorities have long been stressing the relevance of adequate sleep. Unfortunately, there are many people who actually end up being susceptible to the health disadvantages carried along in struggling with sleep troubles.

A study was carried out and published in Current Biology.

In this research, it has been found that untreated sleep disorders and insufficient sleep may put one at the increased odds of metabolic problems, such as diabetes and obesity. The findings specifically stressed that even extra sleep on the weekends is adequate to lessen the risks.

“The key take-home message from this study is that ad libitum weekend recovery or catch-up sleep does not appear to be an effective countermeasure strategy to reverse sleep loss induced disruptions of metabolism,” says Kenneth Wright of the University of Colorado Boulder.

There are many people who sleep more on the weekends than they do during the week. However, it has not been known how going back to an insufficient sleep schedule during the workweek following a weekend of recovery sleep could influence metabolic health.

The study was spearheaded by Christopher Depner and Wright who enlisted healthy young adults. Every participant was randomly assigned to one of three groups. It is further worth noting that the first actually had plenty of sleep time, namely 9 hours, every night for 9 consecutive nights. The second had five hours and the third slept for five days followed by a weekend.

The sleep restriction in the first group was lined with a reduction in insulin sensitivity of around 13 percent. However, the group that actually had a chance to sleep more on the weekend still exhibited less insulin sensitivity.

Researchers particularly revealed that there was a decrease in the insulin sensitivity of their whole bodies, liver, and muscle by 9 to 27 percent after they got insufficient sleep again, and it was when the weekend was over.

An increasing number of studies are now highlighting the relevance of maintaining adequate levels of nutrients like B vitamins. In various research studies, it has been found some B vitamins are particularly helpful for sleep improvement.

There are highly potent and superior-strength supplements like Divine Bounty B Vitamin Complex that may be helpful in delivering the healing goodness of these nutrients.
