Research Shows Cranberry Compounds May Be Alternative to Antibiotics

(Newswire.net — December 20, 2021) Orlando, FL — Urinary tract infections affect millions of people around the globe today. This type of infection is often caused by E.coli and is usually treated through the use of antibiotics.

While this medication is helpful, its misuse or overuse drives a growing global health issue called antibiotic resistance.

It turned out that in a study, compounds in cranberry show promise as alternatives to antibiotics.

The findings of this research were presented at the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society in San Francisco. Over the years, researchers have been carrying out studies to look into the therapeutic impacts of consuming cranberry for UTIs.

The study has shown that compounds in cranberry work in changing E.coli bacteria in ways that disable them from causing an infection.

This has led researchers at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) to suggest that cranberry may potentially be an alternative to antibiotics. The investigators were Terri Camesano, associate professor of chemical engineering at WPI, and graduate students Yatao Liu and Paola Pinzon-Arango.

It is worth noting that the E.coli bacteria is a class of microorganisms found to be behind a host of human illnesses, such as kidney infections or tooth decay. It is worth keeping in mind that many of these studies have concentrated on the ability of cranberry juice to treat UTIs.

The proanthocyanidins of cranberry have been found to change the cell membranes of the bacteria and transform their shape from rods to spheres. They even make it difficult for bacteria to make contact with cells.

The investigators revealed that cranberry juice works in compressing the fimbriae on the surface of E.coli, inhibiting them from binding tightly to the lining of the urinary tract.

“We are beginning to get a picture of cranberry juice and, in particular, the tannins found in cranberries as, potentially potent antibacterial agents,” Camesano says.

“These results are surprising and intriguing, particularly given the increasing concern about the growing resistance of certain disease-causing bacteria to antibiotics.”

Making the best use out of the healing goodness of cranberry may be made through the use of superior-quality supplements like Divine Bounty D-mannose.
