Study Shows a Mediterranean Diet May Reduce Heart Attack Odds

A study was carried out by a research team from the University of Córdoba, Queen Sofia University Hospital, and the Maimonides Biomedical Research Institute of Cordoba (IMIBIC). 

In this study, it was found that following a Mediterranean diet may lessen the odds of having another heart attack. 

The findings of this research were published in PLOS Medicine. 

The investigators compared the impacts of two different healthy diets on the endothelium, which pertain to the walls covering the arteries. It involved 1002 patients who had previously had an acute myocardial infarction and who were monitored over the course of a year.

According to José López Miranda, the degree of endothelial damage predicts the occurrence of future cardiovascular events, as in acute myocardial infarctions. 

Miranda is a researcher on the study and coordinator of the “Nutritional Genomics and Metabolic Syndrome” research group at the Maimonides Biomedical Research Institute of Cordoba. 

“If we can take action at the initial stages, prompting endothelium regeneration and better endothelial function, we can help to prevent heart attacks and heart disease from reoccurring,” he adds. 

In this research, half of the participants were asked to follow a Mediterranean diet, and they consumed plenty of virgin olive oil, eating fruit and vegetables every day. They also had three servings of legumes, three fish, and tree nuts a week. 

The subjects were also made to cut down on their meat consumption, especially red meat, and avoid butter, margarine, and sugar. 

More studies are still being carried out to explore the heart health benefits of this eating pattern deeper. However, it is worth noting that the foods it consists of have strong anti-inflammatory benefits.
