(Newswire.net — June 27, 2022) — One of the essential senses you have is your eyesight. Your eyes can do many amazing things, taking information and relaying it to your brain so you can clearly process everything around you. A significant percentage of your perception comes from your eyesight, and protecting it reduces the risk of developing eye diseases like glaucoma and cataracts. Additionally, taking good care of your eyes helps prevent the loss of vision or blindness. However, most people may still neglect to take better care of their eyes, opting to forgo regular visits to their eye doctor when they feel they have no problems with their eyesight.

While you may not feel the need for regular eye exams, they are necessary to keep track of your eyes and overall health. These exams allow eye doctors to find out if you have other health issues that need to be addressed, like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and liver disease. Of course, they can also identify eye health problems like cataracts and glaucoma. Early detection of these issues can help in administering the correct treatments.

Apart from regular exams, there are ways to keep your eyes healthy and prevent severe problems later on. When you take steps to keep your eyes healthy, you can also stop dry eye, maintain adequate eye moisture, and reduce the discomfort you experience from this condition.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle

A healthy lifestyle does not only ensure your overall wellness but keeps your eyes healthy too. If you are physically fit, your eyes benefit from it. So, you must maintain a healthy lifestyle. Developing healthy habits such as eating well-balanced, nutritious food and staying physically active reduces the risk of developing diseases that may affect your eye health. Diabetes and high blood pressure are just some of the conditions that impact the state of your eyes. Eating food rich in omega-3 fatty acids like salmon and tuna, and leafy dark green vegetables help keep your eyes healthy. Regular exercise also keeps you physically fit and helps prevent diseases that lead to eye problems. It is also best to stop smoking as it may lead to macular degeneration or cataracts.

Wear sunglasses outside

The sun’s ultraviolet rays can harm your eyes and increase the risk of developing macular degeneration and cataracts. The best way to protect your eyes when you are exposed to sunlight is to wear sunglasses, preferably those that block 99-100% of dangerous UV rays. Should you be wearing contact lenses, you may want to wear those that protect your eyes from the sun’s UV rays. You can wear sunglasses just the same for additional protection.

Allow your eyes to rest

Most people spend many hours in front of their computer and experience eye strain, blurry vision, and other eye discomforts. While you cannot avoid working on your computer, you can protect your eyes by allowing them to rest from the screen. Take time out every twenty minutes to look away for at least twenty seconds so your eyes can take a much-needed break.

Finally, it is best to have regular eye examinations to determine your eye’s condition and maintain good eye health.
