Researchers Say That Processed Meat Intake Increases Dementia Risk

(Newswire.net — July 20, 2022) Orlando, FL — Over the years, researchers have been carrying out studies to look into the negative health effects of processed meat. 

Scientists from the University’s Nutritional Epidemiology Group have shown that consumption of processed meat may increase the risk of dementia.

The study used data from 500,000 individuals and found that consumption of a 25g serving of processed meat a day, the equivalent to one rasher of bacon, is linked with an increased risk of developing the disease by 44 percent.

The findings have particularly shown that eating some unprocessed red meat, such as veal, pork, or beef, could be protective. This is due to the fact that those who consumed 50g a day of unprocessed red meat were less likely to develop dementia by 19 percent.

The investigators tried to see whether there is an association between red meat intake and dementia development. It is important to note that dementia affects 5 percent to 8 percent of individuals over the age of 60 years around the globe. 

The study title is “Meat consumption and risk of incident dementia: a cohort study of 493,888 UK Biobank participants”.

Its findings were published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

“Worldwide, the prevalence of dementia is increasing and diet as a modifiable factor could play a role,” lead researcher Huifeng Zhang, a Ph.D. student from Leeds’ School of Food Science and Nutrition said.

“Our research adds to the growing body of evidence linking processed meat consumption to increased risk of a range of non-transmissible diseases.” 

This study involved data provided by UK Biobank, a database containing in-depth genetic and health information from half a million UK participants aged 40 to 69. It sought to investigate links between consuming different types of meat and the risk of developing dementia.
