(Newswire.net — September 16, 2022) Orlando, FL — Menopause has long been linked with certain symptoms like hot flashes. It is worth noting that there are other negative health outcomes it is linked with.

A study, which was published in Rheumatology, has revealed that women suffering from rheumatoid arthritis had a greater drop in physical function following menopause.

This research looked into 8189 women who suffered from rheumatoid arthritis. The pre-menopausal women were found to have a slower physical decline compared to those that were post-menopausal.

It is worth noting that physical function is an essential aspect of study in those with rheumatoid arthritis as it affects their quality of life. It is worth keeping in mind that women suffer from rheumatoid arthritis at a rate thrice greater than men. Further, they also have more severe decline and increased disability.

In previous studies, it has been found that women with rheumatoid arthritis had shifted in their disease due to hormonal and reproductive life events like childbirth. During pregnancy, women have a reduced incidence of rheumatoid arthritis.

However, during the postpartum period, they have an increased incidence of disease onset and flare. It is also worth mentioning that women with early menopause are more susceptible to developing rheumatoid arthritis than those who experience normal or late menopause.

“Further study is needed as to why women with rheumatoid arthritis are suffering a greater decline in function after menopause,” said the paper’s lead author, Elizabeth Mollard.

Mollard is an assistant professor and an advanced practice nurse practitioner whose clinical focus is on women’s health and maternal/child health.

“Not only is this decline causing suffering for women, but it is also costly to both individuals and the healthcare system as a whole. Research is specifically needed on the mechanism connecting these variables with the eventual goal of identifying interventions that can maintain or improve function in postmenopausal women with rheumatoid arthritis.”

Years of research have highlighted not just the triggers for the worsening of RA symptoms, but also remedies for this condition. It is always important to keep in mind that following the right diet is vital for disease management.

Intake of certain nutrients like B vitamins may even be helpful, and this is due to the fact they work in reducing pain and inflammation. This is based on the studies carried out in the past years.
