Artificial Sweeteners Now Found To Have Toxic Impacts on Gut Microbes

(Newswire.net — December 1, 2022) Orlando, FL — Studies have been carried out to look into the factors influencing the gut microbiota, which is essential for various aspects of health.

A study has shown that FDA-approved artificial sweeteners and sports supplements are toxic to the digestive gut microbes.

It was carried out by researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) in Israel and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and published in Molecules.

It is worth noting that this collaborative research indicates the relative toxicity of six artificial sweeteners and 10 sports supplements that contain artificial sweeteners. These are aspartame, sucralose, saccharine, neotame, advantame, and acesulfame potassium-k.

The researchers further revealed that bacteria found in the digestive system turned toxic when exposed to concentrations of only one mg./ml. of artificial sweeteners.

“We modified bioluminescent E. coli bacteria, which luminesce when they detect toxicants and act as a sensing model representative of the complex microbial system,” says Prof. Ariel Kushmaro.

Prof. Kushmaro is John A. Ungar Chair in Biotechnology in the Avram and Stella Goldstein-Goren Department of Biotechnology Engineering, and a member of the Ilse Katz Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology and the National Institute for Biotechnology in the Negev.

“This is further evidence that consumption of artificial sweeteners adversely affects gut microbial activity which can cause a wide range of health issues.”

Experts say that artificial sweeteners are used in a number of food products and soft drinks that have lessened sugar content. A number of people consume this added ingredient without being aware of it.

Further, they warn that artificial sweeteners have been considered to be emerging environmental pollutants, and are widespread in drinking and surface water as well as groundwater aquifers.

“The results of this study might help in understanding the relative toxicity of artificial sweeteners and the potential of negative effects on the gut microbial community as well as the environment.

Furthermore, the tested bioluminescent bacterial panel can potentially be used for detecting artificial sweeteners in the environment,” says Prof. Kushmaro.

Artificial sweeteners and other unhealthy ingredients and substances can accumulate in the system and wreak havoc on health. It may be beneficial to detoxify the body and one of the ways to do this is to use activated charcoal.

Divine Bounty Organic Activated Charcoal may be an excellent choice for individuals who want to reap the benefits of using this remedy.
