(Newswire.net — September 18, 2016) —At least 29 people were left wounded on Saturday evening after an explosion in the Chelsea quarter in Manhattan.
In the same part of New York, police found something that looks like a pressure cooker, which was connected with wires to a small dark-colored device, CNN reported.
A pressure cooker was also used as an explosive device during the Boston marathon in 2013, which left 200 people injured.
Police checked video footage from the scene of the first explosion in Chelsea where it appears that an unidentified person left something behind, as a result of this, the police were led to the conclusion that it was an intentional act.
According to Reuters, New York police officers believe that the first explosion originated from a nearby waste container.
The mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio, said that early indications are that the explosion was caused intentionally. The Mayor also said that there is no connection to terrorism, and there is no specific or credible threat against New York City at this time from any terrorist organization.
De Blasio explained that the investigators do not believe that the explosion in Manhattan is linked to the bomb that exploded the day before in New Jersey, before the start of the charities race where about 3,000 people gathered. No one was hurt, and the explosion had not caused any damage.
The bomb was planted in a waste container. Beside it was four timed explosive devices, but only one detonated, said Al Della Fave, a spokesman for the Ocean County prosecutor’s office.
He explained that the beginning of the race was delayed for half an hour, and because of that the other devices were not activated. The investigation is still at a preliminary stage, Al Della Fave said, adding that it is still not known whether the motives are criminal or terrorist.
After the explosion, police had cancelled the race and the whole area was evacuated. They brought sniffer dogs to the scene, but they did not find other explosive devices, reports the AFP.
