Increased Antibody Levels May Be Linked with the Risk of Rheumatoid Arthritis

It was found that a doubling level of rheumatoid factor was linked with a 3.3-fold increased rheumatoid arthritis risk. It was also revealed that the highest rheumatoid factor level was associated with a 26-fold increased susceptibility for the condition.

The researchers also found that the highest risk of rheumatoid arthritis, which lasted for 10 years, by 32% was noticed in women who were 50 to 69 years old. It is also important to note that the women smoked and had 100 IU/ml rheumatoid factor level or more.

According to researchers, while the study does not provide that the rheumatoid factor plays a role in the development of rheumatoid arthritis, it may be used to revise certain arthritic guidelines. Rheumatologists can use these guidelines for early referral, even if there is an absence of arthritic joint symptoms.
